"MY JOURNEY STARTED IN THE
PLUSHEST OAK-PANELLED
OFFICE I'D EVER SEEN."

ELIZABETH SIMPSON
CORPORATE LAWYER
AND INVESTOR

“My first day at one of London’s top corporate law firms was one of the most exciting, and daunting, of my life.

In the 80s, I handled several mergers. It was exhausting, working such long hours. All that kept me going was adrenaline and champagne.

I remember wondering how I was ever going to meet a man who wasn’t a lawyer. Then I bumped into my future husband, William, while out celebrating a deal.

William and I made our decision based on earning potential: I got the business suit, he got the baby sling.

After London, work in the Virgin Islands felt very relaxed – but the money was good. My banker helped me build up a great investment portfolio, too.

Bizarrely, coming home to look after my mother turned into a great career move. The idea of setting up my own firm, in Manchester, was irresistible.

The irony of selling my firm to a big London corporate wasn’t lost on me. Afterwards, William and I went crazy, jumping about in the fountains in Piccadilly Gardens.

This was my journey to prosperity. I don’t regret the sacrifices, because we have so much freedom now. Who knows, maybe I’ll start a whole new journey, just for the thrill of it”.
